Manchester Women's Awards

I will be posting about this in full when I have time later in the week. However I wanted to share with you this post by Karen Cropper, daughter to former Labour Councillor Kath Fry.

We presented a special award in memory of Kath at the awards this year and Karen's post outlines in full why we named the award after Kath and who the award went to:

Sure Start Changes

The Council are currently consulting on proposed changes to the early years services. The proposals come on the back of Government cuts to the Council budget. With the limited funds the Government cuts have left us with we need to ensure that we target the funds we have in the most effective way, focusing on those who need support the most. We want to do all we can to make sure more children are school ready and able to learn, and also to help more parents and carers access work. Changes have to be made but the new proposals, if agreed, will be introduced gradually over the next four years.

Some of the proposals include:

• Establishing a citywide outreach service - working closely with GPs, midwifery and health visiting services, and others - that will aim to visit every child at home during the child's first three years.

• Staff will work from existing centres to identify at the earliest opportunity children and families who might need extra help.

• The Council intends to keep open and make better use of existing children's centre buildings so that they deliver a wide range of services to people of all ages, including early years services. There is no proposal to close these buildings.

• The Council will still ensure that 15 hours free day care is available for all three and four year olds with additional support for children and families who most need it.

For details of information sessions about the proposals or to submit comments visit: www.manchester.gov.uk/surestartchanges

Make sure you have your say on this important consultation.

Just as funding for improvements to the Beresford Road area are agreed ConDem cuts put the improvements at risk..

Abid and I join the protest to Save Levenshulme Baths - ConDem cuts threatened the baths with closure but thankfully Manchester City Council were able to throw the baths a lifeline....

The Chand Raat at Longsight Market proves a roaring success again this year

Abid and Luthfur try their hand at street sweeping. High levels of litter and dumping continue to be a blight in Longsight. Tackling this continues to be a priority for us as local Councillors.

.....after a hard afternoon feeding our guests we get time for a quick photo op

Been away awhile.....

Well the first 12months of Councillor life have proved incredibly hectic and a big adjustment. Slowly I am getting my work, life and councillor balance in order and hope now to start blogging again on a more regular basis.

Basically when it comes to a choice between dealing with a piece of casework, catching up on work, having some personal time or updating the blog, the blog has been losing out every time!

Now I am firmly into my 2nd year of Councillor Life and loving every minute of it....

We have had a challenging few months in the ward which I will blog more about later. But I am back and have every good intention to keep up to date with the blog and keep you informed of life in Longsight and beyond.....
